A Brief History of Raleigh, NC

In the 1500s, Sir Walter Raleigh sponsored the “Cittie of Raleigh,” but it was set up near Roanoke Island, about 190 miles away. The current city of Raleigh was named after him in 1792 when it became the seat of government for NC. Today, a statue of Sir Walter Raleigh stands outside the Raleigh Convention Center downtown.

One monument to Raleigh’s history in North Carolina government is the North Carolina Capitol building, which was completed in 1840 and has become a national historic landmark. The state legislature no longer meets in the Capitol building but at the North Carolina State Legislative Building two blocks away.

Great Raleigh Culture

Raleigh is home to dozens of state and local history museums and modern art museums, including the North Carolina Museum of Art and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

There are many parks in the area, too, from small parks like Worthdale Park to large parks like nearby William B. Umstead State Park.

And something is always happening in Raleigh, whether the event is held downtown or in a neighboring area. Annual Raleigh area events include:

  • Rock n’ Roll Marathon
  • World Bluegrass Festival
  • North Carolina State Fair
  • First Night Raleigh
  • and more!
